About the Language

Swahili is an East African Bantu language originating from the Swahili People of Zanzibar. While there are some Arabic words in Swahili due to interactions with Arabic traders, it is regarded a Bantu language for 70% of the words are derived from Bantu languages.

Kiswahili is the lingua franca and one of the working languages of the East African Community
(EAC). The East African Community whose headquarters is in Arusha in the Republic of Tanzania is composed of countries Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Dr Congo, Somalia and South Sudan. It is taught and spoken in various degrees in 30 countries across Africa and is fast becoming a language of commerce and African unification.

It allows one to communicate with over 500 million people who speak the language

Gives learners the opportunity to promote Pan Africanism through having a common language to champion African social, economic and political interests globally

Why visit East Africa?

The three original East African countries of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are a place to visit especially if one wants to learn about the Swahili culture and practice Kiswahili language.

The tallest mountain in Africa (Kilimanjaro), the biggest lake (Lake Victoria), the largest national park (Serengeti) and the deepest lake (Tanganyika) are all found in East Africa.

The semi autonomous island of Zanzibar is the origin of the official dialect of the language and has a rich diverse culture in the forms of its music and art that needs to be experienced similar to someone who studies French should visit France.

About the Instructor

Monday Akol is a Ugandan Teacher, Author, Cultural Activist, Journalist and Pan African.

His education and professional background speaks to the scholar and expert he is on Swahili language and culture.
